Putting boxes at a location
A location is a place. Boxes live at locations. The relationship is bidirectional — same as items-in-box, you can manage it from either side.
Method 1 — From the location
When you've just unpacked a moving truck and dropped 20 boxes in the garage, this is the fast way.
- Open the location's edit page.
- Scroll to the Boxes at this location fieldset. You'll see a checkbox list of every box in your account.
- Tick the boxes that are at this location.
- Save.
Same controls as the items-in-box picker: Select all, Clear, filter, live count. Same warning behaviour: if a ticked box is currently at a different location, you'll see a ⚠ warning, and saving moves it.
Method 2 — From the box
When you create or edit one box, the Location dropdown lets you pick where it lives.
Items at a location (without a box)
You can put an item directly at a location without going through a box, but only via the closet path or by leaving the box and closet both blank. The item then has no box and no closet — it's just "at the location" implicitly via whatever closet/box it ends up in.
In practice, almost every item is either in a box or in a closet. The "loose at the location" case is rare and usually means you haven't decided where to put it yet.
Visualizing the location's contents
The location's view page lists:
- Boxes at this location — count and list. Click any box to drill in.
- Closets at this location — count and list.
- Items at this location — only items that have
location_idset directly, NOT items inside boxes/closets at this location. (We're considering changing this — let us know if it's confusing.)
To see the full contents of a location including everything inside boxes and closets, drill into each box/closet from the location page.
Self-storage units
The most useful location to model carefully. A typical setup:
- Location: Self-storage Hertogstraat 12 unit 47A, kind: Self-storage unit
- 15-30 boxes at this location, each one containing 5-50 items
- Maybe 1-2 closets (a wardrobe, a shelf rack)
- Print large labels for each box, smaller stickers for the items inside
Stick a QR on the unit's door pointing to the location. Now: arrive at facility → scan door → see what's inside before opening.
